The Irish filmmaker is currently shooting Re-creation, starring Vicky Krieps, and the Basque director will soon orchestrate 8, with Javier Rey and Ana Rujas.
The Spanish agency Latido Films will start to manage the international (pre-)sales of Re-creation at the European Film Market of the 74th Berlinale (15-25 February). A co-production between Ireland and Luxembourg by the companies Hell’s Kitchen and Joli Rideau Media, it is directed and written by Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father and In America, among others) and David Merriman, and stars Vicky Krieps (seen last year in Ingeborg Bachmann – Journey into the Desert [+]) and Sheridan himself. The film, which is currently being shot, tells the story of a fictional trial where twelve jurors must decide whether journalist Ian Bailey is guilty of the murder of French filmmaker Sophie Toscan Du Plantier in 1996. Based on real events and through the discussions between these twelve people, the film reconstructs a case that invites the viewer to draw their own conclusions.
Another eagerly awaited title from the line-up of this Madrid-based company that is coming to Berlin is 8, the next film by Julio Medem, which marks the return of the director of iconic Spanish films such as The Red Squirrel and Lovers of the Arctic Circle and whose filming begins at the beginning of March. Produced by Eidan Produce, Morena Films and Quexito Films and starring Javier Rey (Unknown Origins [+]) and Ana Rujas (La Mesías [+]), it tells the story of how Octavio and Adela were born on the same day: 14 April 1931, but in opposing families. Over the next 90 years their lives will intertwine, through intense encounters and misunderstandings, in eight episodes told in sequence shots. «A passionate love story between a brave and determined woman and a man facing his contradictions, with the history of Spain and Europe as a backdrop», states Latido Films.
Two Spanish films that will premiere at the upcoming Malaga Film Festival are also part of Latido Films’ line-up in Berlin: Los pequeños amores (Little Loves), the second feature film by Celia Rico (Journey to a Mother’s Room [+]), a Spanish-French co-production starring María Vázquez and Adriana Ozores (read more); and Segundo premio (Saturn Return), a film about the music scene in Granada in the 1990s directed by Isaki Lacuesta (winner of two Golden Shells at San Sebastian for The Double Steps [+] and Between Two Waters [+], and selected for the Berlinale competition with his latest One Year, One Night [+]) and Pol Rodríguez (Quatretondeta [+]). Also noteworthy is the new film by producer and director Gerardo Herrero, Raqqa (Raqqa: Spy vs Spy), a co-production with Morocco currently in post-production (read more).
The sales company headed by Antonio Saura also manages three fruitful film partnerships between Ibero-America and Europe: the Spain-Argentina co-production Lo que quisimos ser (What We Wanted to Be), a dramatic comedy by Alejandro Agresti (Valentín [+], the American La casa del lago); Aire: Just Breathe, a futuristic dystopia produced between Spain and the Dominican Republic by Leticia Tonos Paniagua that was at the IFFR; and the political thriller Justicia artificial (Artificial Justice) (Portugal/Spain), directed by Galician Simón Casal (Dirty Wolves [+]) (read more).
Other titles in this line-up include Summer in Red [+], a crime thriller by Belén Macías, already released in Spain; One Night with Adela [+], an incredible debut from Hugo Ruiz that was awarded at Tribeca; and Championext [+], the second instalment of the hugely successful saga in Spain, directed by Javier Fesser.
