Spain is the world’s top producer of extra virgin olive oil, with the province of Jaen alone generating 20% of the entire production. Director José Luis López-Linares travels to every last corner of this region in inner Andalucía to present each stage in the life of so-called “liquid gold,” from the moment the first fruits appear on the trees until it reaches tables around the world. The journey highlights a land full of charm, art and history, and also analyses the future of this industry. The film premiered in the Culinary Cinema section of San Sebastian Film Festival and has also been presented, with a notable reception, at a dozen other festivals in different continents.
Olive oil is not just a superfood; in the region of Jaen it also represents a way of life. This documentary shows the importance of its history, its people’s work and the extraordinary enterprise of a group of local businessmen seeking to produce one of the best olive oils in the world from Picual olives.
