Like an adaptation of ‘Novecento’ set in contemporary rural Uruguay, this third film by Montevideo-born Manolo Nieto, co-produced between his country, Argentina, Brazil, and France, portrays the class struggle from the perspective of two young people of similar ages, the employee and the boss of the title. Without caricatures or ideological positions, the director presents a sort of Greek tragedy that serves as a perfect metaphor for capitalism. An uncomfortable, surprising, and captivating film selected at the San Sebastián Festival and featuring the great performance of the Franco-Argentinian actor Nahuel Pérez Biscayart, winner of a Cesar for “120 pulsaciones por minuto”.

The employer is a young man who apparently has everything going on for him except one pressing concern: his baby’s health. The employee is looking for a job to support his newborn too, so does not hesitate when the first decides to hire him to work in his lands even if he lacks the experience. Both will meet their needs by helping each other. But one day an accident happens. This unexpected event will strain the ties between them, endangering the fate of the two families.
