WHY WE LOVE IT

Based on David Jiménez’s controversial autobiographical bestseller, THE EDITOR is a gripping political drama that exposes the darkest side of journalism and its dangerous ties to political, economic and corporate power. In the vein of Spotlight, Network and The Newsroom, the film transforms a real-life battle for editorial independence into a tense, compelling story about ambition, integrity and press freedom, exploring the conflicts between truth and influence in a world where information has become one of the most powerful currencies. Following the success of the Goya-winning box-office hit Undercover (€9.7M in Spain), Beta Fiction Spain and Secuoya Studios bring this powerful bestseller to the screen. The screenplay is penned by Goya Award winners Michel Gaztambide and Alejandro Hernández, while acclaimed director Dani de la Orden, whose multi-award-winning A House on Fire became a major critical and commercial success, brings a tense, realistic and almost documentary-style approach to the story.

At the heart of the film is a powerful confrontation between two of Spain’s most acclaimed actors: David Verdaguer, a two-time Goya winner known internationally for Summer 1993 (Best First Feature at the Berlinale), and Alberto San Juan, also a two-time Goya winner, whose credits include the Disney+ series Cristóbal Balenciaga and The People Upstairs, a successful comedy adapted for several international markets. Their performances drive a compelling exploration of the personal and professional cost of standing up to powerful interests. Combining the intensity of a political thriller with the authenticity of a true story, THE EDITOR offers a timely and universal reflection on the fragile relationship between journalism, democracy and power.
