Bartosz M. Kowalski’s new film is halfway between the fantasy genre and psychological horror. With a mise-en-scène and imagery that unfailingly refer to the films of Guillermo del Toro, the director immerses us from the beginning in an anguishing tension in-crescendo that leads to an ending as shocking as it is unexpected. With his fifth film, the prestigious Polish director, author of the impactful PLAYGROUND (San Sebastian Film Festival and the Fantastic Fest), the chilling diptych NOBODY SLEEPS IN THE WOODS TONIGHT (Netflix), and the distressing HELLHOLE, confirms himself as one of the key names in the golden age of Polish cinema today.
Octogenarian Lucjan is admitted by his son to a bucolic nursing home, where he is warmly welcomed by his fellow residents and the facility’s workers. But soon he discovers a secret hiding in the basement, and his visions coincide with the death of several of his companions and the appearance of strange evil creatures that manifest themselves every midnight.
