Animation, Adventure . Directed by Roc Espinet
Spanish animation is experiencing a sweet moment, as demonstrated by the Oscar nomination for «Robot Dreams.» The newest gem in the genre is «Chica y lobo,» marking comic book artist Roc Espinet’s directorial debut with the film adaptation of his own adult graphic novel. Behind the project are Signatya and Hampa Studio, the producers who triumphed in 2018 with the masterpiece «Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles,» joined this time by the prestigious and multi-award-winning Wanda Films («The Milk of Sorrow») and Latido itself. A luxurious line-up for a 2D animation film that stylistically and conceptually draws from the sources of the legendary Japanese Ghibli Studios and is backed by the Best Animation Project Award at the Ventana CineMad International Development and Coproduction Forum. In the original Spanish version, the voices of the main characters are provided by three Goya winners, Belén Cuesta («The Endless Trench»), Luis Zahera («The Beasts»), and Tamar Novas («The Sea Inside»).
Adventures, mystery, action, and plenty of fantasy are the main elements of a coming-of-age tale that narrates the adventures of Paula, a naive and timid teenager who suffers bullying in her village. Her life takes a 180-degree turn when an ancestral pack of wolves, perpetually at war with humans, bursts into her life. Straddling the two worlds, the young girl embarks on an initiatory journey in which she learns to overcome her traumas while discovering her darker side and uncovering inner powers she never knew she had. Because Paula is both Girl and Wolf at the same time.
