Comedy. Directed by Carolina África
FAMILY AFFAIRS marks the directorial debut of actress and playwright Carolina África, who is also the author of the theatrical work on which the film is based. It is a dramatic comedy that explores female characters, reminiscent of the films of George Cukor, Ingmar Bergman, and Pedro Almodóvar. At the same time, it is a tribute to family and an ode to life, highlighting the beauty of everyday details. Selected for the Seminci in Valladolid, the film was acclaimed by the audience. Its cast is exceptional, featuring four Goya winners Carmen Machi, Barbara Lennie, Irene Escolar, and Antonio Resines—and Victoria Luengo, who won Best Actress for BORN at the NYCIFF.
Four generations of women from the same family gather in Madrid on a cold December day. The meeting has been organized by the sexagenarian Teresa to remember her late husband. She is joined by her four thirty-something daughters, her granddaughter, and her nonagenarian mother-in-law, who suffers from senile dementia. The contrasting personalities of the sisters immediately spark conflicts, bringing to light secrets and lies, forcing them to confront their frustrations, fears, and desires… while never forgetting their family ties and striving to maintain hope for that uncertain thing called happiness.
