WHY WE LOVE IT

In 2009, in her film “El esfuerzo y el ánimo,” director Arantxa Aguirre wondered about the future of Béjart Ballet Lausanne following the passing of its founder and alma mater, Maurice Béjart. In this 2016 work, she followed up on the story, presenting the staging and rehearsals in Tokyo for Beethoven’s “Ninth Simphony,” in which Béjart Ballet Lausanne collaborated with the Tokyo Ballet and the Israel Symphony Orchestra, directed by Zubin Mehta. The film highlights the complexity of the project, due to its ambition, rigorousness and heterogeneous mix of origins and cultures of the participating artists. Nominated for a Goya for Best Documentary, it received the Best Documentary Award at Valladolid Festival in 2017. This film is truly, as the title by which most of us know the “Ninth Symphony” indicates, a hymn to joy.
